Hyper Lode Runner  Bandai (Tose)1989I can forgive the simple graphics and music/sfx. The major fun in Lode Runner lied always in solving the fifty tricky platform mazes. And while they left the basic concept untouched in this Gameboy version I didn't like it as much as the classic homecomputer versions. The main reason for this is the small screen and the fact that the level is scrolling. You can't see the whole level on your screen, which makes planning in advance very difficult. The controls are also not the best ones. I sometimes felt I died because the controls didn't do what I wanted them to do. All in all this makes one extremely difficult and braintaxing game.***Earthdate: 2264. The renegade Red Lord of Darkness has overthrown the United World government with his army of cyborg fanatics. Millions of political prisoners are being tortured in his infamous Labyrinth of Doom far beneath the surface of the planet. Very little is known about this subterranean maze of brick-walled catacombs. Just vague rumors about the hidden millions in stolen gold guarded by a ruthless band of mutant cyborg zombies commanded by the merciless General Zod. Only one thing is sure... none of your predecessors have ever come out of this dreaded place alive. But you must find a way out with a lode of gold big enough to launch the counterrevolution. You are the last hope; the last of the great Lode Runners.***

Boomer's Adventure in Asmik World  Asmik (Dual)1989Sure, maybe on the outside, Boomer is cute and a bit on the pink side. But on the inside, he's all fight! He has to be tough. Boomer is the last warrior left in Asmik World. Before Boomer can defeat the dark lord Zoozoon in his tower, Boomer needs to dig up an assortment of buried weapons and destroy Zoozoon's mutant guards. But if Boomer cannot find the key to the 8 different worlds of the tower, he will never battle Zoozoon for control of Asmik World. Time is running out, both for Boomer and the good people of Asmik World. They need your help NOW!***

[36]***The goal of each level in this game is to reach the exit stairs. The door in front of the stairs can only be opened with a key and this key is well hidden somewhere on the map. The problem is that you have to dig the key out first and there is no hint where the key is. Even more problematic that also the numerous enemies on screen might dig it out and hide it in a different place. So each level is pretty hard when you first play it because you have to thoroughly search the screen all along avoiding contact with monsters. About each eighth level you must face a boss enemy which are also very difficult to beat. At least you get a password before and after these bosses. The main character moves rather slowly and as I said it unnerved me to search the key. Graphics and sound are ok for an early Game Boy game. An overall pretty average game for experienced players who want to face a good challenge.
